CCR BLOG- Creative Critical Reflection, reflecting on the journey of the first film!
Hello everyone! welcome to my CCR Creative Critical Reflection Blog!
1. How does your product use or challenge conventions AND how does it represent social groups or issues?
Our commercial was centered around sports, so the conventions used revolved around sports. Beginning the with the simplest yet most crucial is the product which serves as a convention itself, a Gatorade Protein Bar. Sports athletes need protein and fuel to empower them to excel, a protein bar further exudes this as it would be the source of this power. The setting takes place on a track where we see different track tools in the scenes such as hurdles. We then have the character/actor, an athlete dressed in athletic clothes further contribution that central theme in a sport’s commercial, a T- shirt, athletic shorts, and running shoes. The actions performed by the actor serve as a convention as well, in the commercial David is stretching and dashing along the track. Another convention would be the usage of audio codes. In the commercial we used a song that was strong and suggested power. In a sport’s commercial you want to suggest power, strength, and athleticism, having the appropriate soundtrack helps achieve this.
2. How does your product engage with audiences AND how would it be distributed as a real media text?
The product engages with audiences by appealing to emotion, the pathos component, to encourage them to go out and buy a Gatorade Protein Bar after they view the commercial. In this commercial, our desired audience is athletes but on a more specific scope, high school athletes. By having David, a high school track athlete, star in the commercial already will give our target demographic a sense of relatability. The music we used also helps appeal to this emotion. We used a song that had a tune to it, a song that even felt rather empowering, and when paired with the high school athlete and incorporating our product into this mix, it helps us to engage with the audience. The product would be distributed as a real media text by being used in ads as it is a protein bar, by getting our product in print, or even on virtual ads via social media platforms helps distribution.
3. How did your production skills develop throughout this project?
Throughout this project, my production skills were developed through teamwork and experience. In elaboration, before starting this project I was someone who preferred to work alone because I felt as though when I worked independently things would go smoother than if I was in a group. I was proven wrong, throughout the project, David and I encountered many triumphs accompanied with many failures and downfalls. These setbacks were rough the persevere through in a team so I can only imagine how I would have handled them alone. Production is a team effort, of course it can be done alone but the art of collaboration helps ideas innovate and flourish. By having David there, he was able to help me in areas where I fell short and give me ideas to increase production value. In the experience aspect, having done this project, I gained experience to now know how to navigate through future projects to come. Having this experience helps me understand the level of both physical and mental preparation it takes to produce a film. In the future more vigorous projects will be assigned so having this experience has helped me to be ready to tackle them.
4. How did you integrate technologies – software, hardware and online – in this project?
Technologies were integrated in this product by my team and I using the preexisting knowledge and the access we had to create our project. David and I are both teenagers who grew up in the age of technology, we are quite knowledgeable on technology, definitely not on the professional cinematographer level but we had enough knowledge to produce our commercial. To mimic filming cameras, we used the smartphones we had to the best of their ability to capture clear and concise shots, this served as our hardware. For editing purposes, we used apps that we had access to via our smartphones and laptops to create this project. CapCut was the primary editing software we used to put together this project and although it isn’t as extensive, it was a very sufficient editing software used.
