Movie Convention Blog - 13 Going On 30

13 Going on 30 starring Jennifer Garner is a classic American coming of age film. The film follows our 13 year old main character and protagonist Jenna who is sick of her adolescence and how lack luster it appears to her. Jenna is desiring a boyfriend, to be popular, and after being humiliated at her 13th birthday party, Jenna's desires transform into her wanting to just hide forever until she becomes a 30 year old adult. Eventually Jenna's desires become reality and she wakes up one day as a full fledged 30 year old woman. As her wish is fulfilled, Jenna goes through the trials and tribulations of being a grown adult woman. Battling through the fast life, new adult responsibilities, conflicts with old classmates from the past 17 years, along with a new set of male and females conflict in the adult world. Jenna is then tasked with facing the moral lesson of growing up to fast and salvaging your youth, adulthood isn't the carefree lifestyle we dream of as kids, the classic coming of age film where we learn a primitive developmental lesson with our key protagonist.

C.A.M.S (camera angles, movements, shots)

- establishing shots: The film takes place in bustling New York City, a significant location signifying Jenna's new found independence when she spawns as a 30 year old. Many establishing shots of the city are captured to emphasize this metaphor in the film.

- tracking shot (movement): As Jenna moves through the city, many tracking shots are used to show her moving perspective

-wide shots: A common theme in the film is dancing! Wide shots are commonly captured to showcase these scenes

- close up angles: These angles are commonly used to focus on and emphasize the emotions Jenna goes through

- two shots: As Jenna spawns as a 30 year old woman, her childhood best friend and love interest, Mark Flamhaff is a significant character. The two shots between these two capture the intimacy of the two while focusing on their relationship.

C.L.A.M.P.S (costumes, lighting, actors, makeup, props, setting)

- costumes: Since the 13 year old portion of Jenna's life took place in the 80s so 80s clothing were worn. Scrunchies, bright colors, leg warners, typical 80s attire. The second 30 year old wave of Jenna's life took place in the early 2000s so typical feminine wear was worn. Silk short dresses, kitten heels, claw clips. Another key costume is Jenna's striped party dress, an icon of the film.

- lighting: To further emphasize the 80s, bright lighting was used especially when Jenna turned 30 which she associated as a better portion of her life.

- makeup: makeup was kept relatively light, to emphasize the bubbly feminine look of Jenna, lipsticks and blush were used.

- setting: Significant settings of the movie include New York City specifically Jenna's Manhattan apartment, Central Park, and Poise fashion magazine, the company Jenna worked at once she turned 30.

- A crucial element of a coming of age film is that the main protagonist must learn a crucial and moral lesson to reach maturity. I like how this film take the initiative of handling a universal thought and lesson all teens will learn at some point, cherish being a kid! I also appreciate the contrast used in the film when they show a 13 year old Jenna and a 30 year old Jenna. When Jenna was a 13 year old, she only focused on the negatives of her life and only held the superficials important in her life such as boys and popularity. When Jenna turned 30, she was only able to focus on the fun aspects of adulthood like being able to go out late and not the real life conflicts of adulthood. This helped to emphasize how as kids we only view things from a kid perspective. As teenagers we only view what we want when it comes to adulthood without conceptualizing what being an adult is.

- A common coming of age element is when the main protagonist is going through their trials and tribulations towards maturity, they become highly unlikeable. Although this element is crucial to a classic coming of age film, Jenna became a very unlikable person once she turned 30. Jenna became very superficial, neglectful of her friends and family, and convinced her neglected sweetheart of 17 years, Matt Flamhaff to leave his Fiance for her. I really did not like the wasting of Jenna's character however it did show that to develop as a person the good and the bad must be shed through.
