Title Research Design Blog - But I'm A Cheerleader

Hello everyone! Welcome to my third of four title design research blogs! This blog will be following the coming of age film, But I'm A Cheerleader.

But I'm a cheerleader is an early 2000s coming if age film following our main protagonist Megan who is what you would consider the "perfect American girl." She's blonde, a cheerleader, popular, a religious Christian with a very religious upbringing, and to top off her "perfect" life persona, Megan is dating a very handsome popular football player sho she appears to not be totally interested in but the couple still "work." Later on, Megan's friends and family begin to suspect that she is a lesbian and in a non LGBTQ accepting environment, they urge to send her to True Directions which is a boot camp style conversion therapy "rehab." While in at conversion therapy, Megan runs into a fellow rebellious lesbian teenager and starts to develop and recognize her feelings as Megan comes to terms that she is a lesbian.

1. How many titles are displayed during the opening sequence? Which ones?

- The opening sequence displays 7 titles. The first title is the production company's professional logo, Lionsgate. The second is the more movie aesthetic "Lions Gate films presents." The third title is the second production company, Ignite Entertainment, the fourth title is The Kusher-Locke production company, the fifth is HKM films, the sixth is cast credits, and seventh is production credits.

2. What connotations do the images carry? How do they make you feel?

- The images give a feminine nostalgic feel to enter around Megan's hyper femininity and surrounding the early 2000s nature of the film. The letters of the title are fun and bright and pink and the opening images are bright and pink as well.

3. How is genre reinforced through symbolic and technical codes from the outset? Can you tell what genre the film is?

- Genre is shown through the environment Megan is in as well as her conflict she battles and overcomes. The primitive environment Megan is centered around is high school and the teen environment which is essential to coming of age films as they center around adolescents growing up through plights. Coming of age films crucially center around a main protagonist who must overcome either internal or external journeys. In Megan's instance, the battle she overcomes and comes to terms with towards the end is her sexuality which brings a link to genre.

4. What conventions are used to ensure the film appeals to its' target audience?

- The general target audience of the film is any teenager who overcomes feeling ashamed of their sexuality to then growing to accept it. The conventions used to appeal to this are through actors/characters. Megan is deemed a relatable character demographic, she's a young teenage girl who goes against the stereotypical "lesbian" archetype. She's feminine, a cheerleader, she's popular and religious this can help to appeal to those who don't fit their sexuality's "stereotype" yet still feel troubled within their sexuality.
